2021+ F-150 5.0L Tuning, Explained Plainly

Ford, F-150, Gen 4, 5.0L V8

Why 2021+ trucks need an extra unlock step before most tuners work, which of the nine tuning products on this site need it and which don't, and what each one actually claims.

If you've shopped for a tuner for a 2021+ F-150 and gotten confused about why some products mention a "PCM unlock" and others don't, this is why: starting with the 2021 model year, Ford's factory engine computer (Ford calls it the MG1CS036 PCM) shipped locked in a way that blocks some tuning tools from writing to it at all, until a separate unlock step runs first. This guide walks through all nine 5.0L tuning products active on this site for 2021+ trucks, which ones need that unlock step, and what each one actually claims to do.

Buy at HP Tuners

This is a service, not a tune -- it doesn't add power on its own. What it does is reflash the factory PCM so it will accept writes from HP Tuners' tools at all. HP Tuners' own coverage documentation lists the 2021-2023 5.0L V8 specifically. After this service, you still need an HP Tuners interface (their MPVI2+/MPVI3/MPVI4 hardware, about $400) and Universal Credits (about $50 each, 4 needed per HP Tuners) before you can actually load a tune -- this unlock alone doesn't get you a running tune.

Products that need the HP Tuners unlock first

Lund Racing sells a custom tune FILE, not a device -- you load it through hardware you already own or buy separately (an HP Tuners interface, Lund's own LRX, or an SCT device). Lund's own page states plainly that if you're using HP Tuners hardware, the PCM has to go through the unlock service above first.

Also a tune file rather than a device, built to load through whichever interface you already own. 5 Star's own listing for this specific product doesn't explicitly restate the HP Tuners unlock requirement, but based on how the HP Tuners ecosystem works on these trucks, it's a reasonable bet that using HP Tuners hardware with this tune means the same unlock step applies -- worth confirming with the seller before you buy rather than assuming either way.

Products that don't reference needing the unlock

These either use their own proprietary hardware/software ecosystem instead of HP Tuners, or explicitly say no unlock is needed. None of their own product pages mention the MG1 unlock service.

MPT's own listing states plainly: "No PCM swap or Unlock Required." Delivered plug-and-play through the OBDII port. Whether a handheld tuner device is bundled or sold separately isn't fully clear from the listing -- confirm before ordering.

A remote tuning service using ZackTuned's own "RTD+" tool rather than HP Tuners hardware, and it tunes both the engine computer (PCM) and transmission computer (TCM) together -- the only product in this guide that explicitly covers both. Whether the RTD+ tool itself is included in the price or sold separately isn't stated on the page.

An SCT-branded handheld programmer (sold under the Bully Dog BDX name), ships with pre-loaded dyno-tested calibrations and about a 15-minute install -- no separate unlock step, since it runs on SCT's own system rather than HP Tuners'.

Livernois's handheld MyCalibrator touch tuner for 2021-2023 trucks -- plug it into the diagnostic port and load a new calibration. It's the strongest power claim in this guide (see below) and comes with a real, sourced figure, not vague marketing language.

The same MyCalibrator concept, built for the redesigned 2024-2025 truck's factory computer specifically -- this is the only tuning product on this site right now built for 2024-2025 5.0L trucks rather than the original 2021-2023 PCM.

What these actually claim

Two of the nine products publish a real power figure; the other seven don't. Livernois's 2021-2023 tuner claims +38 whp / +45 wtq peak-vs-peak on 93 octane, and its 2024-2025 version claims up to +31 whp / +37 wtq. Both are CLAIMED (manufacturer-published) figures, not independently tested. The other seven -- the unlock service itself, Lund, 5 Star, MPT, ZackTuned, and both SCT products -- either explicitly publish no number, or the number that does appear elsewhere (MPT's site-wide "+100 hp" tagline) isn't specific to a stock, naturally aspirated 5.0L and so isn't reported here as a real claim for these products. That's normal for tune-only products on a non-boosted V8: gains from software alone on a stock naturally aspirated engine are real but modest, nothing like what a tune adds on a turbocharged or supercharged truck.

Emissions

Livernois's 2021-2023 tuner cites CARB Executive Order D-752-27 (50-state legal). None of the other eight products state a CARB or emissions-legal status on the pages checked -- that's an honest gap, not a claim that they aren't legal, just that it isn't stated. If you're in a state with emissions testing, confirm directly with the seller before buying. Nothing here is legal advice.

FAQ

Do I need the HP Tuners unlock no matter which tune I buy?

No. It only applies if you're using HP Tuners hardware specifically. Five of the nine products here (MPT, ZackTuned, both SCT products, both Livernois tuners) run on their own systems and don't reference needing it.

What's the difference between a "tune" and a "tuner"?

A tune is the calibration file itself -- the actual changes to fueling, timing, and shift behavior. A tuner (or programmer) is the physical device you plug into your truck's diagnostic port to load that file. Some products here are devices with a tune already loaded (SCT's two products, both Livernois tuners); others are just the tune file, meant to load through hardware you already own or buy separately (Lund, 5 Star, and partly MPT).

Will any of these void my Ford warranty?

None of the nine product listings address Ford's warranty position directly -- HP Tuners' own materials don't address it either. If that matters to you, ask a Ford dealer before modifying the PCM. Nothing here is legal or warranty advice.

Which one actually makes the most power?

Livernois is the only brand here with a published number either year -- +38 whp/+45 wtq for 2021-2023, +31 whp/+37 wtq for 2024-2025. The rest don't publish a figure, which doesn't necessarily mean they do less, just that there's nothing to compare against a real number for them.
