If your Silverado 1500's factory bumper is cracked, you want recovery points for pulling yourself or a buddy out of the mud, or you just want the truck to look like it means business, you're choosing between three different styles: a full replacement front bumper, a full replacement rear bumper, or a lighter bull bar that bolts over what you already have. This guide covers all three for the 1500 specifically. The heavier 2500HD/3500HD trucks use different bumpers entirely and get their own guide.
RideBuildList earns commissions from some retailer links.
Full replacement front bumpers
A full replacement front bumper takes off the factory plastic and bolts on a steel or aluminum piece, usually with built-in recovery points and room to mount lights or a winch. Every front bumper listed here runs about 3 to 5 hours to install and needs two people, since the steel pieces are heavy enough that one person wrestling them onto the mounts alone is asking for a dropped bumper or a pinched finger.

- TRAILFX TrailFX Steel Front Bumper FLDB011TI 2022-2026 Chevy Silverado 1500, TrailFX's steel front bumper for 2022-2026
Weight is the real trade-off across all of these. A heavier bumper changes how the front of the truck sits and can call for a suspension adjustment to get your ride height back where it was. That's not a knock on any one brand, it's just physics, so budget for it mentally even if you don't end up needing it.
Full replacement rear bumpers
Rear bumper swaps are less common than front, mostly because people want the front for a winch or a brush guard look and leave the rear alone. Still, three options exist for the 1500:
- American Expedition Vehicles AEV Rear Bumper for 2019+ Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, American Expedition Vehicles' rear bumper, which is built to fit both the Silverado 1500 and the GMC Sierra 1500 since they share the same rear structure
- Iron Bull Bumpers 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Rear Bumper | Parking Sensor Cutouts Available, Iron Bull's rear bumper for 2014-2018, also available with parking sensor cutouts
- TRAILFX TrailFX Rear Bumper RLDB009TI 2019-2026 Chevy Silverado 1500, TrailFX's rear bumper for 2019-2026
Same install time and crew size as the fronts: plan on 3 to 5 hours with a second person.
Bull bars and brush guards
A bull bar is a different animal from a full bumper swap. Instead of replacing the factory bumper, it bolts over it, usually with an integrated light bar and skid plate, and the whole job is a one or two hour, one-person install with no drilling. You lose the recovery points and winch mounting a full bumper gives you, but you also lose most of the cost and most of the install time.
Nilight's bull bar for the current 2019-2024 body shows up twice in our catalog at the same price, likely the same physical part listed under two different IDs: Nilight Bull Bar with 17in Light Bar & Skid Plate (19-24 Silverado/Sierra 1500, new body) and Nilight Bull Bar with Light fits 2019-2024 Chevy Silverado 1500(Excl. 19 LTD Classic) & GMC Sierra 1500(Excl. 19 LTD Classic) Front Bumper Grille Brush Push Guard with Skid Plate Licence Plate Hole. Either link gets you the same bar. Nilight also makes a version for the older 2007-2018 body, but our catalog doesn't have a live price on that one right now, so it isn't linked here.
One thing Nilight states plainly on its own listing and worth repeating: this bull bar may interfere with front parking sensors. If your truck has them, confirm with Nilight or your installer before you buy.
The 2019 body-year trap
2019 is the year to slow down on. GM sold two different bodies that year: the carried-over old-body truck, badged 1500 LD or Sierra 1500 Limited, and the new-body 1500 that launched alongside it. A bumper or bull bar built for "the new body" will not bolt onto a 2019 LD or Limited, and one built for the old body won't fit the new one either. Check your exact trim badge, not just the model year, before you order anything for a 2019 truck.
Picking between the three styles
| Style | Install | What you're trading |
|---|---|---|
| Full front bumper | 3-5 hrs, two people | Highest cost, winch and recovery points, changes ride height |
| Full rear bumper | 3-5 hrs, two people | Same install demands, usually adds rear recovery points |
| Bull bar / brush guard | 1-2 hrs, one person | Lowest cost, bolts over the factory bumper, no recovery points |
A few more things worth checking before you buy anything on this list:
- Confirm ZR2-specific parts only if you actually have the ZR2 package. A standard 1500 with the matching body year will not take the ZR2-specific bumper.
- Ask about winch-ready mounting if that's the point of the upgrade. Not every bumper here advertises itself as winch-ready, and the Body Armor listing specifically calls itself a non-winch version.
- If you run front or rear parking sensors, ask the seller directly whether your chosen part has cutouts or interferes with them before you install it.
- Line up a second person for any full bumper swap. None of these are a solo job.
The legal stuff, briefly
Some states and municipalities have their own rules on bumper height, front-end overhang, and what counts as a legal "bumper" versus a brush guard for registration and inspection purposes. None of that is something RideBuildList or this guide can settle for you, and a seller's claim that a part is "street legal" is the seller's claim, not a legal conclusion. If you're unsure whether a specific bumper is compliant where you register and drive your Silverado, that question goes to an attorney or your local DMV, not a parts catalog.
This guide covers one category, bumpers, for one truck, the Silverado 1500. It isn't a running total of what a full build costs, since almost nobody is buying a front bumper, a rear bumper, and a bull bar all at once. Pick the style that matches what you actually need the truck to do, then pick the brand and body-year fit from there.
