A cold air intake replaces the stock airbox and filter with a large open-element filter in a heat-shielded housing. On the 7.3L this is mostly about letting the turbo breathe and keeping exhaust gas temperatures down when loaded.
why this one — There is not much still being made for the 7.3L, and this is one of the few intakes where the manufacturer publishes an actual dyno claim (+17 hp, +44 lb-ft) instead of only an airflow percentage. It is covered by CARB EO D-550-24. Read the fitment carefully before you buy: aFe explicitly excludes the 1999 IDI 7.3L, so it fits the Power Stroke only.
