The intercooler is the metal box under the front bumper that cools down the hot, pressurized air coming out of the turbo before it goes into the engine. Factory rubber-and-plastic pipes carry that air from the turbo to the intercooler and back to the engine. This kit replaces those factory pipes with aluminum tubing plus new silicone boots and clamps.
why this one — The earliest Duramax trucks (2002 through mid-2004) are known in diesel circles for cracking or splitting their factory intercooler pipes, especially once a truck is tuned for more boost. Mishimoto builds this kit specifically for that early truck, includes both pipes plus all three boots and clamps in one box, and backs it with their lifetime warranty. Mishimoto does not publish a horsepower number for it, so treat this as a durability and airflow upgrade rather than a guaranteed dyno gain.
Mishimoto's own product copy claims "improved airflow, more power, and lower EGTs" from replacing the factory plastic piping with aluminum, but publishes no dyno-tested or specific HP/TQ number for this SKU. source ↗
