The differential cover is the plate bolted to the back of your rear axle housing that holds the gear oil in. This is a thick cast aluminum replacement for the stamped steel factory cover, and it holds about three quarters of a quart more oil.
why this one — Extra oil volume and aluminum fins matter most if you tow heavy or run in hot country, because gear oil temperature is what kills rear differentials. It also has a drain plug, which the factory cover does not, so future gear oil changes stop being a messy job of pulling the whole cover off. The honest downside is that this does nothing for a truck that never tows, and it is a cosmetic upgrade at that point.
