An exhaust brake restricts exhaust flow on the way out so the engine has to work against that back pressure, which slows the truck without touching the service brakes. This is an inline butterfly valve that clamps into the exhaust and is controlled electronically, so there is no air compressor or air lines to plumb.
why this one — This only makes sense for people who tow heavy in mountains. Your 2013-2024 Cummins already has a factory exhaust brake built into the variable-geometry turbo, so this is an addition to that rather than a fix for something missing, and BD claims up to 150 retarding horsepower from it. The honest downsides are steep: it is over a thousand dollars, it needs exhaust and electrical work, and a truck that tows flat or light will never notice the difference.
