An intercooler cools the compressed air coming out of the turbo before it enters the engine, and cooler air is denser air. This one replaces the factory unit with an all-aluminum core and two cast aluminum end tanks.
why this one — The real reason to do this on an 06-10 is the factory plastic end tank, which can split under raised boost and dump your charge air in one go. Banks replaces both end tanks with aluminum and adds 25 percent more core flow volume, so you fix the failure point and gain flow in the same job. Be realistic about the effort and the payoff: Banks own estimate is 6 hours with the front end apart, and they publish no horsepower number for it, so this is insurance and consistency rather than a dyno gain.
Banks publishes 25% more core flow volume than stock and claims lower exhaust gas temperatures, but publishes no hp, torque, or measured charge-air temperature drop for this SKU. source ↗
