Running a Duramax long enough, you eventually deal with the exhaust manifolds. On these trucks, what people casually call "headers" really means the exhaust manifolds and up-pipes, the cast pieces that carry exhaust from each cylinder bank up into the turbo. RideBuildList earns commissions from some retailer links. If you're shopping for a replacement set on a Silverado 2500HD/3500HD, this covers what's actually in the catalog for your engine code, whether that's an early LB7 or a current L5P.

One honest note before anything else. None of the manifold or up-pipe kits in this guide publish a horsepower or torque figure, on any brand. That's not RideBuildList leaving something out, the catalog listings themselves give no number for this category. Treat a manifold and up-pipe swap as fixing a known failure point and improving exhaust flow, not as a dyno-proven power part, and be skeptical of anyone who quotes you a specific gain for one.

Why people replace these at all

The stock up-pipes use a bellows joint that cracks and leaks as it heat-cycles over the years. One LBZ-specific kit's own listing explains the problem plainly: a cracked bellows costs you boost and makes the truck sound like it has an exhaust leak, because it does. If your truck has developed a tick or a hiss up near the turbo, this is usually why, and it's the main reason owners replace manifolds on a truck that otherwise runs fine.

2001 to 2016 trucks: LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML

This is the long run of first and second generation Duramax engines, and it has the most options in the catalog.

2017 and newer: L5P

What this job actually involves

Every kit in this guide lists install difficulty on the harder end of the scale and a shop-level time estimate, not a weekend-in-the-driveway job. The manifolds sit buried against the firewall on these trucks, it's hot, cramped work, and most owners pay a shop for it rather than fighting it themselves. Budget for that labor on top of the part itself, and plan on at least a once-over from your shop afterward since you're changing how exhaust and boost move off the turbo.

Before you buy

  • Match the kit to your exact engine code, LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, or L5P, not just your model year range. Several of these listings only cover part of the 2001 to 2016 window, and the port spacing changed enough between generations that the wrong kit won't fit.
  • Decide if you actually need a full manifold replacement or if your truck just needs the up-pipe bellows joint fixed. A full billet set and a stud and nut hardware kit solve very different problems at very different costs, and buying the expensive one when you needed the cheap one is money you won't get back.
  • Ask about coatings and materials before you buy. Billet, cast, and ceramic-coated versions all show up in this category, and the catalog doesn't publish a durability number for any of them, so lean on the retailer's own warranty terms and your own research into how each brand's coating has held up for other Duramax owners rather than on the price tag alone.

One legal note

Exhaust manifolds and up-pipes sit upstream of emissions equipment on a diesel truck, and federal and California emissions rules treat modifications there differently depending on your state and your truck's model year. This isn't legal advice, and RideBuildList isn't a substitute for checking with an emissions compliance attorney or your state's inspection program if you're not sure where your truck or your state lands on this. A seller's own compliance claims on a listing are theirs, not ours, and you should verify them independently before you buy.
